Shaun Wilson

$0.00

Shaun Wilson (b. 1972, Melbourne) is a Melbourne based artist working across painting and video art, with a practice spanning more than three decades. Central to his work is a preoccupation with memory and place, questions he first encountered as an art student near Mordialloc in the early 1990s and has returned to ever since, in oil on canvas and in the moving image alike.

Wilson's paintings are quiet, closely observed landscapes: the bays and beaches of Melbourne's south east, from Mordialloc to Beaumaris and Sandringham, the rural stretches of the Bellarine Peninsula, and the wide light of outback New South Wales around Broken Hill. Wilson began using video from 1998 as what he describes as an extension of his painting practice, work he has called "video paintings": moving image pieces that carry the same attention to composition, light and place as his canvases. His major video projects include The 51 Paintings Suite, an eighteen year study reconfiguring poses from medieval German plague era paintings into new locations, Filmic Memorials, twenty long form films built from decades of family home movies shot across Europe, the Pacific and Australia , and Black Garden, a feature length film held in the historical archive of the Venice Biennale.

He has exhibited and screened at over two hundred venues internationally, including the Cannes Film Festival, Tate Modern, the Australian Centre for the Moving Image, and the Venice International Film Festival, where his work is now held in the Biennale's historical archive. Wilson holds two PhDs, from the University of Tasmania and Flinders University, alongside earlier degrees from RMIT University and Monash University, is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts ANZ, and is a Senior Lecturer in Digital Media at RMIT, where his research continues to inform both bodies of work.
